People with missing teeth have various tooth or teeth replacement options to choose from, one being dentures. A denture is a removable or fixed restoration used to replace a missing tooth or teeth and the surrounding gums.
Two kinds of dentures exist, and they are partial and full dentures. Dentures can also be removable or fixed. Implant-supported dentures are affixed to the jaw, meaning they provide more stability and prevent the drawbacks associated with removable restorations.
When to Get Partials or Full Dentures
Complete or full dentures are a choice when you have all the teeth missing. Typically, a dentist would recommend partials if you have lost three or more teeth next to each other. Partials may be a better option than full dentures in replacing lost teeth within the lower jaw where some natural teeth can still be saved.
However, partial dentures are likely to increase plaque buildup around the support teeth or abutment teeth, often leading to gum infection and decay. The abutment is likely to encounter trauma together with the gums as a result of pressure and movements of the partials.
Aftercare Tips for Dentures
Patients will have an adjustment period. Once you start wearing your new partial or full denture, you will have an occasional sore spot. This is normal, and when it occurs, contact our dentist. We will schedule an appointment whereby an adjustment is made to the restorations. Most of the time, a brief appointment is able to eliminate any uncomfortable areas that your denture may be causing.
In case you had your teeth removed during the day you received your denture or partials, you should avoid removing the denture for the first 24 hours apart from when rinsing the piece every few hours. On the second day, start doing salt water rinses.
Ensure you brush the denture daily. Moreover, because the gums will heal and shrink over time, your denture is likely to get loose. It is, therefore, prudent that you get back to us to have the piece relined. Talk to us about dentures and we will answer any concerns you have. Visit us if you need dentures.
