Ways of Boosting Your Oral Health Today

Ways of Boosting Your Oral Health TodayMost people probably already understand the basics of good oral health. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and reducing your consumption of sugar and acid are all excellent ways to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. But in addition to these fundamentals, there are a few small steps you can take today to immediately boost your oral health.

Clean Your Tongue

If you are not already cleaning your tongue as part of your tooth brushing routine, you should start. Just like your teeth and gums, your tongue can also harbor harmful plaque and bacteria. Plus, cleaning your tongue also helps to keep your breath fresh. Many toothbrush heads have grooves on the back that are designed for cleaning your tongue, or you can simply brush your tongue with the soft bristles of your toothbrush. You can also use a tongue scraper if you find that easier.

Rethink the Way You Brush

Your brushing technique is just as important as how often you brush. We recommend brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day, using short strokes with your toothbrush head at a 45-degree angle toward your gums. Do not brush too roughly or apply too much pressure, as this can damage your tooth enamel and harm your gums. Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, and if you like rinsing with mouthwash, wait about fifteen minutes after you brush so you do not immediately wash away the fluoride from your toothpaste.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is incredibly beneficial for both your oral and overall health. Most tap water in the United States contains fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay. Plus, water cleans out your mouth and washes away bacteria, acid, and food particles after meals. Drinking enough water throughout the day also keeps your mouth moist, which prevents bad breath.

Try Oral Health-Boosting Foods

There is evidence to suggest that certain superfoods can be beneficial to your oral health. Antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, dark chocolate, and parsley contain compounds called polyphenols and flavonoids that fight oral bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. To give your oral health an immediate boost, try incorporating some of these superfoods into your diet today. Contact our office for more ways to improve your oral health.
