Dental Tips for Handling a ToothacheA toothache is usually a signifier of underlying dental complications. There are many reasons why a patient's toothaches, and if not treated early, it can result in tooth extraction. Before a dentist recommends tooth extraction, they assess the extent of damage and consider any viable solutions that can be used to salvage the tooth.

If a patient experiences a toothache, it is advisable to schedule regular appointments with a dental expert. This gives the dentist time to assess the extent of damage before coming up with a treatment plan to save the tooth. However, the longer you wait to treat the affected tooth, the more likely extraction becomes inevitable.

Toothache Remedies

For patients with a minor toothache or who can't access dental services, several solutions effectively mitigate the pain. Some home remedies can take care of that sudden toothache in the middle of the night, offering relief as you wait to consult a professional dentist. Some of these remedies include:

Cold Compress

An ice pack is an effective pain reliever, especially for toothaches that are accompanied by swelling. Holding the cold compress against the affected part is an effective way of temporarily relieving pain, allowing one to experience some comfort and rest before seeing a dentist. If the problem is advanced, like a tooth canal infection, then a cold compress cannot be effective as expected.

Clove Oil

Clove oil is used as an effective toothache remedy, which relieves pain after it is rubbed over the affected area; patients should use a cotton ball that is soaked in clove oil to rub the gums and tooth. Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural anesthetic. Although clove oil is effective in reducing pain, it has an unpleasant taste. It is important to remember that these home remedies only provide temporary relief, and you must seek treatment to avoid further complications.
