Choosing the best dental implant option for you

Dr. Hoos may opt for placing mini dental implants in small spaces or in areas where there is insufficient bone for anchoring five-millimeter implants.

Like a conventionally sized dental implant, mini dental implant posts are composed of biologically compatible titanium and are used to support a dental restoration. A mini dental implant is smaller in diameter, less than two to three millimeters, as compared to the larger five-millimeter implant post.

Dr. Hoos uses both mini and conventional dental implants to provide a supporting “root” for restorations, from a single tooth to a full denture. He will carefully explain his reasons for choosing an implant option, as well as the pros and cons of each.

Experience you can rely on

Dr. Hoos has placed over 3,000 implants during his esteemed career, and has been placing mini dental implant posts for over 15 years. In addition to helping his own patients benefit from healthier mouths, he also teaches other dental professionals about implant procedures.

This level of knowledge and experience provides Dr. Hoos with the ability to recommend the precise type of implant and restoration that will be the most beneficial for your specific case.

When to use a mini dental implant

Bone loss

Bone loss occurs when missing teeth are not replaced with dental implants.

One of the main factors Dr. Hoos must consider when planning an implant placement procedure is the amount of bone that is available for the post to be anchored into. Tooth loss inevitably leads to bone loss, and the longer a tooth has been missing, the more bone has been reabsorbed.

When there is not enough bone to support a conventional five-millimeter implant, and bone graft procedures are not advisable or desirable, Dr. Hoos can use mini implants to support a restoration in areas with less dense bone.

Small spaces

In situations where patients have smaller than average jaws, or when natural teeth are very close to the implant site, Dr. Hoos may choose to anchor slender mini dental implants into limited spaces to precisely secure restorations.

Minimally invasive procedure

Due to their diminutive size, Dr. Hoos can usually place mini dental implants in under two hours without cutting or suturing. This minimally invasive approach results in reduced healing times and minimal discomfort.

Bone grafting and/or sinus lifts may frequently be part of the traditional implant process; however, neither of these procedures is necessary when placing mini dental implants.

An affordable option

Because placing mini implants requires less time, no additional procedures such as bone grafts, and fewer visits to the dental office, this option is usually more economical than traditional implant placement.

Replacing a single tooth

Dr. Hoos may choose to replace the root of a single missing tooth with a mini dental implant to provide the stimulus needed to deter bone loss. He covers the mini implant with a durable, natural-looking crown fabricated by a top-notch lab to return full function to this area of your mouth.

Stabilizing your dentures

Dr. Hoos can stabilize your loose dentures with mini dental implants so that you can eat, talk and smile with confidence and comfort.

People who wear dentures are well aware of how uncomfortable they generally are, and how difficult it can be to keep them in place. Dentures often become loose when eating or speaking, and float around in your mouth in a manner that is both embarrassing and annoying.

The good news is that Dr. Hoos can stabilize your dentures with mini dental implants! Dentures stabilized with mini dental implants provide you with up to 90% of your natural chewing power. Comparatively, dentures without stabilization offer only about 10% of normal chewing ability.

Denture stabilization frequently requires six to eight implants per arch, although Dr. Hoos can sometimes achieve stabilization of your denture with as little as two implants.

The head of the mini implant is shaped like a ball that fits into a socket in the denture. The socket contains a rubber O-ring to create a tight seal and allow for the pressure of chewing. Your dentures can now be easily snapped on and off.

Snap-on dentures can be slept in although they should be removed for cleaning.
